Summary

This document is an index of half-verses (Karikardhapad Suchi) for the Pramanavartikabhasya (also known as Pramanavartikalankara), a significant philosophical work by the Buddhist scholar Prajnakaragupta (circa 8th Century AD). The index was compiled by Pt. Rupendra Kumar Pagariya and published by the L. D. Indology, Ahmedabad, in July 1970 as part of the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Series, No. 29.

The preface, written by Dalsukh Malvania, the Director of the L. D. Institute of Indology, highlights the following:

  • The Work: The Pramanavartikabhasya is a voluminous philosophical treatise written in a prose-and-verse style, containing a substantial number of verses (2666 in total).
  • Author's Method: Prajnakaragupta frequently presents the opponent's viewpoint (pūrva paksa) in the opponent's own words.
  • Source of Verses: It is noted that not all verses in the Bhasya are original to Prajnakaragupta. A significant portion of the Niralambanavada chapter from the Slokavartika is quoted, and at least 80 verses are identified as being found in the Slokavartika. Additionally, there are verses attributed to Kumarila Bhatta that are not found in his Slokavartika, possibly originating from his lost Brhattika. The preface also mentions the common practice in Sanskrit literature of adopting and slightly modifying verses from other authors.
  • Purpose of the Index: The index was created because no such index for the Pramanavartikabhasya verses previously existed. It is intended to be a valuable tool for:
    • Scholars: Aiding research scholars engaged in critically editing Sanskrit philosophical texts.
    • Chronology: Potentially helping to establish the chronological order of Sanskrit writers.
  • Corrections: The compiler made some corrections or amendments to the printed verses where deemed necessary during the index's preparation.

The bulk of the document is the actual index itself, presented in Sanskrit. It lists half-verses, followed by numerical references that likely indicate:

  1. Chapter Number (Parichhedanka)
  2. Verse Number (Shlokanka)
  3. Page Number (Prishthanka)

The index is organized alphabetically based on the initial words of the half-verses, allowing users to quickly locate specific sections or identify the source of particular phrases within the extensive Pramanavartikabhasya.
